Obnoxious social media– in a nutshell.

How to Get More Followers on Twitter

May-10-2009 By Nicole

Are you looking for more followers on Twitter? Are you trying to make yourself known from having thousands of followers? You might have created your account a few days ago, or even a year ago. But the numbers aren’t as you pictured it when you clicked submit to make your account and though, “Oh wow! I’m going to have millions of followers!”

By now, maybe you’ve realized that the only people who DO have millions of followers are people who were well established before joining twitter. As in celebrities, web stars, etc. And for the people just starting out in social media, you’re going to have to work for it. Build your way to the top. I’ve had my twitter account for almost two months (May 18th will be two months) and I have 3,600 followers. If you’re reading this, you’d say “Well if you’re writing this article, you must know how to get the numbers. Why aren’t yours higher?” Yes, I CAN make them higher. And I get probably 100-200 followers everyday now. But there is a thing called quality. If people are to follow you, they need something high quality to read. And by high quality, I don’t mean to have the best writing a person with a doctrine in English could have. I mean something that someone could respond to. Or something you think the people would enjo reading. Like my taco Bell tweet that was retweeted 20 times:

If the general audience finds it worthy enough to be retweeted, then not only will your followers see your tweet, but
their followers as well. Which might lead to a potential follow, but if not, your tweet has been shown to more than just your followers. Generally, this is what is craved for more in twitter than having millions of followers. Another kind of tweet to post is one to interact with your followers. I asked the question how was their weather, and they gladly replied. This is how you know it’s going well with your followers.

And the response I got from this was amazing. At first, I got only 5 responses, but as the day goes on, a follower would find another tweet of mine, go to my page and read the weather tweet, and respond. Getting responses is generally better than have millions of followers and no one reply back to you.

Did I mention the retweeting? Oh yes, I did. So let me retweet that thought again: Get retweets. Don’t ask for retweets. Make it worth retweeting. And sometimes you’ll find a retweet you didn’t expect.

Now on to the followers. If you need to actually GET followers, try to follow everyone who is not a celebrity. And by
celebrity, I mean who follows 5 people but has 756,857,234,345 followers. Not a very good chance that they’ll actually follow you back. To build yourself up on twitter, you must follow who follows you. It is like the Myspace craze of ”PC4PC?” There are many people like you on twitter who want millions of followers. So doing this will not only help you, but help them. And it helps on Fridays. The “#followfriday” craze in which you recommend the people that your
followers should follow.

Even if you have one person do this for you, that just means that all their followers that you do not have will see this. It will benefit you, no doubt. You just need to work at it. And even better if someone retweets another person’s recommendation of #followfriday with your name on it!

Sure, everyone thinks getting followers is easy. All the sites that tell you that if you pay this much, you’ll get 10,000
followers in a week. Actually, twitter will find this a fraud account if you’re not a big celebrity, and it will be deleted. Getting followers is not easy, so if you’re willing to work hard, do these steps.  And don’t forget to enjoy the ride. I’ve met some amazing people on twitter!
